Erosion along creekside properties can quietly undermine yards, retaining walls, and shared community spaces if it’s left unaddressed. EverGreen Infrastructure recently completed erosion control and slope stabilization work at Creekside at Brentwood, a single-family residential community in Davidson County, Tennessee. The project focused on three areas adjacent to homes along Lazy Creek Lane, each requiring grading, erosion protection, or drainage improvements to keep the property stable and functioning as intended.

What Causes Creekside Erosion?

Properties bordering creeks and drainage channels face constant pressure from moving water. Rain events push runoff toward the lowest points on a property, and over time that flow can strip away soil, undercut slopes, and destabilize retaining structures. Left unchecked, this erosion can threaten the ground beneath homes, walkways, and yards, and it can compromise the retaining walls and drainage systems designed to hold everything in place. 

Two of the most effective tools for managing this kind of erosion are geotextile fabric and rip rap. Geotextile fabric acts as a soil separation barrier, keeping fine soil particles from migrating up through a graded surface while still allowing water to pass through. Rip rap, made up of large, angular stone, is then placed on top to absorb the energy of moving water and hold the slope in place. Together, these materials create a durable, long-term barrier against future erosion. 

The Work We Completed 


Area 1: Grading and Rip Rap Installation 

Our crews mobilized equipment to grade an area measuring approximately 66 feet by 30 feet. Geotextile fabric was installed as a soil separation barrier, then capped with large, angular rip rap to prevent future erosion. 

Area 2: Extended Slope Stabilization 

A second, larger section measuring approximately 132 feet by 30 feet received the same treatment. The graded area was covered with geotextile fabric and capped with rip rap to prevent further erosion along this stretch of the property. 

Area 3: Retaining Wall Extension and Drainage Improvements 

Behind 433 and 435 Lazy Creek Lane, our crews addressed a more involved repair. Using 6″ x 6″ treated wood posts, the team raised the height of an existing retaining wall by approximately 18 inches. To improve stormwater flow away from the homes, three catch basins with connecting pipes were installed. The area was then backfilled with gravel, and top soil was added to the sloped portion of the site to prepare it for new vegetation.

Across all three areas, any ground disturbed during the work was stabilized with straw mat and grass seed to encourage healthy regrowth while the site re-establishes itself. All removed materials were hauled away and disposed of at an approved off-site facility.

Raising and reinforcing the retaining wall behind 433 and 435 Lazy Creek Lane, paired with new catch basins for proper drainage, also ensures stormwater is directed where it belongs rather than pooling against the wall or the homes above it.
