Dry retention Ponds

Dry Ponds

Dry ponds are typically dry basins with concrete inlet and outlet structures designed to mimic naturally vegetated areas. They detain excess stormwater during rain events, allowing sediment and pollutants to settle out as the water gradually drains. These ponds are particularly effective at flood control and preventing channel erosion by reducing peak flow during storms and providing a safe storage area for water.

Maintaining Dry Detention Ponds

Maintaining these systems is crucial for their proper functionality. As sediment builds up, the pond’s capacity to detain stormwater decreases, and the orifices leading to and from the pond can become obstructed. Maintenance usually involves weed control, debris removal, and inspection of the pond’s structures. Occasionally, sediment must be removed to restore the pond’s full stormwater storage capacity.
